Oct. ‘06—Penny House, original dance theater ensemble work, Unfinished Works Series, Culture Project
Apr. ‘06 – conceived and directed a dance theater production, called 18 to 21, at Skidmore College.
- “Simply put, “18 to 21” looks like a collage of text, movement and even music and choreography, allowing for vastly different character interpretations. The students essentially play themselves mimicking other personas, experimenting with the archetype they most resemble, revealing the individual and the universal within their own personal experiences.” The Saratogian
- “what is spoken on stage blends facts and fiction… “18 to 21″ explores the issues of academic pressure, substance abuse, the path to maturity, the challenge of being an articulate adult, sexual awakening and dealing with heartbreak. The Iraq War is also discussed, as is the sense of impending doom that confronts college seniors on the eve of graduation.” The Spotlight
- “a main-stage production so original it didn’t even exist until Kurkjian and her student cast began creating it by exploring their personal takes on their college years” Skidmore Scope Magazine
- “In the words of a Skidmore student, “This show is either going to blow everyone out of the water, or it’s just going to blow.” Well, blow everyone out of the water it did. What had started as a mere idea transformed itself into an accurate, and yet at the same time, completely larger-than-life representation of college life” JKB (Skidmore Theater) Newsletter
